Cleopatra was a very strong willed and in fact a stubborn person. She had her particular beliefs and no one could really change these. Cleopatra was not worried about being different and put actions into doing things that she believed in. Cleopatra believed in both Greek and Egyptian religions. She was actually quite a religious person and participated in various religious ceremonies as well as dressing up as religious gods. She believed religion was important and was one of the things that actually defined you as a person.
Cleopatra participated in various ceremonies regarding religion during her rule. However the most important one was the ceremony that took place when she ascended to the throne. When Cleopatra’s father died she participated in a ceremony in front of Egypt’s highest priests. This ceremony took place in Memphis (considered Egypt’s most spiritual and religious capital). To begin the ceremony they walked where sphinxes lined the causeway that travelled through dunes of sand and to the main temple. In this temple was where the main part of the ceremony took place. This main temple had limestone lions and panthers, Greek and Egyptian chapels, banners were hung everywhere and it was painted in a glowing shade of colour. In clouds of incense Cleopatra was fitted with the serpent crowns of both upper and Lower Egypt. A priest presented these crowns and she was wearing a long linen gown with a panther’s skin across her shoulder. Then to complete the ceremony she would have taken the oath, which made her ascend to the throne.
Cleopatra’s religion was a mix between ceremonies and gods. Cleopatra believed that if you were kind to the gods and gave them proper offerings they would keep Egypt safe. It was one of her responsibilities to make sure that whilst she reigned, she would have regularly visited a temple to make offerings to the gods on behalf of her country.
Unfortunately Cleopatra could not always make an appearance at these ceremonies. When she could not a shaved priest would stand in for her. However the most important ceremonies Cleopatra made an effort to go, as the fate of her country would lie in her hands.
