Did you know in Cleopatra’s family they only used four names? All the men were named Ptolemy and the women were named Cleopatra, Arsinoe or Bernice. To make things less complicated they also had a second name they used (Cleopatra’s was Tryphaena). However the second names were also often doubled up. So for historians to be able to understand the Ptolemy family tree they put Roman numerals after everyone’s name (Cleopatra’s Roman numeral is VII). However tracing down the Ptolemy tree is still quite hard because of intermarrying. For example Cleopatra’s paternal grandfather (Ptolemy IX) was the father of Cleopatra’s maternal grandmother (Bernice III). To make things even more complicated both of her grandfathers (Ptolemy X and Ptolemy IX) were siblings. This then means that Ptolemy IX’s wife was also his niece. How confusing is that? (And that’s just about three people!)
